Side Quest

Not every thread in the world's story is meant to hold up the sky—some are meant to hold up a single heart.

In the quest-governed world of *Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint*, a Side Quest is a secondary objective issued by the overarching system that structures reality. Unlike Main Quests, which drive the grand narrative forward along the novel's predetermined threads, Side Quests branch off into the personal stories of individual characters—offering additional context, hidden rewards, and narrative depth that enrich the world beyond its central plotline. They are the system's way of acknowledging that not every story in this world is about saving the world; some are about saving a single person, a single memory, or a single promise.

Lore & Background

The world of *Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint* operates on a rigid quest architecture inherited from the novel upon which it is modeled. Main Quests form the backbone—large, world-altering challenges that characters must face in sequence. But woven between them, the system also generates Side Quests: smaller, more intimate objectives that attach to specific individuals or groups. A Side Quest might ask a character to deliver a letter, protect a village through a single night, or simply listen to someone's confession. The stakes are lower, the scope narrower, but the emotional weight can be just as heavy as any Main Quest.

In Their Own Story

The notification chimed at the edge of his vision—soft, almost apologetic, like a knock on a door no one expected to be opened. *Side Quest: The Unsent Letter.* Below it, a single line of description: *Deliver the letter to the lighthouse keeper before the tide turns. Reward: One truth you have been avoiding.*

Yoo Jonghyuk stared at it for a long time. Around him, the battlefield still smoldered. The Main Quest on his other hand pulsed with its usual cold urgency, demanding the next kill, the next objective, the next step toward the ending he had been walking toward since the beginning. But this—this smaller thing, this quiet errand for a stranger he had never met—sat there like a hand on his chest, pressing gently, asking him to remember that he was still a person and not just a character in someone else's story.

He closed the Main Quest window. He did not close the Side Quest. He walked toward the coast.

Reader's Guide

**Side Quest** — System Quest Category

**Primary users:** Any character to whom the system assigns the objective; Kim Dokja (the Reader) is the most narratively significant recipient due to his foreknowledge of which Side Quests will appear and their consequences.

**Mechanical effect:** A Side Quest is a secondary objective generated by the world's quest system. It presents a specific, bounded task (deliver an item, protect a location, complete a conversation) with a defined reward. Unlike Main Quests, failing a Side Quest does not halt the central narrative, but the lost reward or missed information can have downstream consequences. Side Quests are distinct from Hidden Quests, which require specific conditions or knowledge to even appear.

**Tier / Level:** Side Quests do not occupy a single fixed tier; their difficulty scales with the surrounding narrative context. A Side Quest issued during a low-stakes arc is simple; one issued during a world-ending crisis carries proportionally heavier weight.

**How obtained:** Side Quests are auto-generated by the system and delivered via the standard quest notification interface. They are not purchased, crafted, or inherited. The Reader, however, can anticipate their appearance and position characters to receive them at the most advantageous moment.

**Most narratively significant moment:** The true weight of Side Quests is felt not in any single instance but in their cumulative role: they are the mechanism by which the system grants the story its human texture. For Kim Dokja, the most significant use of Side Quest knowledge is strategic—he identifies which Side Quest, if completed by the right person at the right time, will unlock a Hidden Quest or prevent a character's death that the Main Quest track would otherwise ignore. In this way, a 'small' quest becomes the fulcrum on which a life, or a faction's survival, pivots.
